Bayern Munich still waiting on Upamecano decision as contract talks drag on
Dayot Upamecano’s contract situation continues to hang over Bayern Munich as the French defender approaches the final months of his current deal, which expires in June 2026. Despite growing speculation that an extension is already agreed, Bayern insist nothing has been finalised and that patience remains essential.
Upamecano has been a key figure in Bayern’s defensive structure over recent seasons, combining physical dominance with improved composure on the ball. His importance has only increased during a campaign in which Bayern have faced repeated injury setbacks and inconsistency at the back. As a result, securing his long-term future has become a priority for the club’s leadership.
Speaking ahead of Bayern’s Bundesliga clash with VfL Wolfsburg, board member for sport Max Eberl addressed the situation directly. While acknowledging the club’s strong desire to keep the centre-back, Eberl made it clear that reports suggesting a completed deal are premature.
“It’s no secret that we want to extend his contract,” Eberl said. “From a sporting point of view, he is extremely important for us. But I don’t care about reports or speculation. What matters is what Upamecano and his agents decide. That is what we are waiting for.”
Eberl’s comments underline Bayern’s cautious approach. Internally, negotiations are ongoing, but the club is keen to avoid public pressure tactics or assumptions that could complicate talks. The message from Säbener Straße is simple: Bayern want Upamecano to stay, but the final choice rests with the player.
For Upamecano, the decision carries significant weight. At 27, he is entering what many consider the prime years of a centre-back’s career. Bayern can offer stability, regular Champions League football, and a central role in a squad that expects to compete for major trophies every season. However, interest from other elite European clubs cannot be ruled out, particularly given the scarcity of top-level defenders with his profile.
While Bayern remain confident, they are also realistic. The club’s recent history includes several high-profile departures when contract talks stalled, and the leadership is determined not to repeat past mistakes. At the same time, allowing a defender of Upamecano’s calibre to run down his contract would be a major sporting and financial setback.
Supporters, meanwhile, are watching closely. Upamecano’s development since arriving from RB Leipzig has earned him trust among fans who now see him as a cornerstone of Bayern’s back line. His performances in high-pressure matches have helped shift perceptions after earlier inconsistency, strengthening the argument for a long-term extension.
Until that decision is made official, the saga surrounding one of Bayern’s most important defenders is set to continue.
