Notorious Premier League referee avoids jail after shocking sexual misconduct scandal

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been handed a suspended sentence after a court ruled on a serious criminal case, nearly 1 year after scandals that marked a dramatic collapse of his professional career.

Sacked Premier League referee David Coote has avoided an immediate prison sentence after being convicted in a case that has sent shockwaves through English football. The 43-year-old, once a regular official in top-flight matches, received a nine-month suspended sentence after admitting to offences relating to illegal content involving a minor. Coote was accuses of downloading a sensitive video of a 15-year-old boy wearing a school uniform.

Coote appeared at Nottingham Crown Court following an investigation launched by Nottinghamshire Police, which began after his dismissal by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited in December 2024.  During sentencing, the court heard that Coote faced a potential maximum sentence of three years in prison. However, the judge opted for a suspended sentence, citing various factors while still describing the case as a “spectacular fall from grace” for a man who once represented the highest levels of English refereeing.

In addition to the suspended custodial term, Coote was handed a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order. The order places strict limitations on his contact with children, his communications, and where he is permitted to live. He was also ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work as part of his sentence.

The investigation into Coote expanded after football authorities alerted police to concerns uncovered during their own probe. Law enforcement officers seized electronic devices, including a laptop on which prohibited material was later found. Further searches also uncovered illegal substances at his home, resulting in a separate caution.

In mitigation, Coote’s legal representatives told the court that he was deeply ashamed of his actions and had taken steps to seek professional help. The defence highlighted his engagement in therapy and ongoing psychiatric treatment, arguing that these efforts demonstrated remorse and a commitment to rehabilitation.

Coote began refereeing in the Premier League in 2018 and went on to officiate more than 100 top-flight fixtures. He was also part of UEFA’s officiating team at Euro 2024, before his career unravelled in the months that followed. His sacking followed the emergence of a leaked online video in which he made offensive remarks about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, comments that quickly went viral and placed him under intense scrutiny.

UEFA has since banned Coote from officiating until June 2026, effectively halting any immediate return to elite football. Once regarded as a trusted official, Coote’s case now stands as a stark reminder of how quickly a high-profile sporting career can collapse under the weight of personal misconduct.
