Real Madrid hit obstacle as deal for 19-year-old Dutch star risks collapse
Real Madrid’s ongoing search for a true midfield orchestrator is beginning to define the direction of the upcoming summer transfer window. After Kroos-and-Modric era, the Spanish giants are carefully assessing profiles capable of controlling games at the highest level. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, one of the most intriguing options on their radar is AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit, though any potential deal would come at a premium price.
Smit has enjoyed a rapid rise in reputation over the past year, establishing himself as one of the most closely monitored young midfielders in European football. His blend of tactical intelligence, positional discipline, and composure in possession has made him stand out in the Eredivisie, while his consistency at a young age has drawn admiration from scouts across the continent. AZ Alkmaar, fully aware of the growing interest, are under no pressure to sell.
Crucially, the Dutch club hold a strong negotiating position. Smit is contracted until 2028, allowing AZ Alkmaar to dictate terms and resist any offers they feel do not reflect his long-term value. Romano has been clear in outlining their stance, stressing that a transfer will only happen if a significant fee is placed on the table. “AZ Alkmaar will not sell the player for €45–50 million, in any way. More will be needed to sell the player,” he explained. He also revealed that bids in the region of €60 million have already been turned down, adding that “the price is higher.”
For Real Madrid, the interest is logical rather than speculative. The current squad boasts energy, athleticism, and attacking drive in midfield, but there remains a noticeable absence of a natural tempo-setter, someone capable of dictating rhythm and offering control during decisive moments. Smit’s profile fits that requirement, which explains why Madrid have been actively scouting him.
However, competition is intense. Romano confirmed that Madrid are far from alone, stating, “All the big clubs are interested,” while noting that several Premier League sides are also monitoring Smit’s situation closely. This growing race only strengthens AZ Alkmaar’s resolve to hold out for a record-breaking fee.
As the summer window approaches, it appears increasingly likely that Smit will move on from the Netherlands. For Real Madrid, the decision now hinges on conviction. If they truly see Smit as a cornerstone of their next midfield generation, they must be ready to meet a valuation that reflects both his potential and the realities of a fiercely competitive transfer market.
