Shock figure emerges! Man United hit with massive compensation bill for Amorim exit
The Red Devils are facing a huge financial bill following the dismissal of head coach Ruben Amorim, with the total cost of sacking him and hiring a replacement potentially reaching £50 million. Amorim was relieved of his duties on Monday morning after a complete breakdown in his relationship with key figures within the club’s hierarchy. His departure brings another abrupt end to a managerial reign that lasted just over a year and highlights the instability that continues to plague Old Trafford.
The situation is made even more expensive by the fact that United only appointed Amorim 14 months ago. At the time, the club paid around £11 million in compensation to Sporting Lisbon to trigger his release clause. That figure came on top of an estimated £10.4 million spent to sack Erik ten Hag, meaning United have already invested heavily in managerial changes over a short period.
Reports suggest Amorim was earning approximately £6.5 million per year and still had close to 18 months remaining on the contract he signed in November 2024. As a result, terminating his deal early will require a significant payout.
According to Dr Rob Wilson, Director of Executive Education at the University Campus of Football Business in London, Man United are likely to owe around £12 million in compensation to Amorim alone. That estimate does not necessarily include payments to members of his backroom staff, who arrived at the club alongside him and may also be entitled to severance packages.
The financial burden does not end there. United are now tasked with appointing a new permanent manager, a process that could extend until the summer. When factoring in recruitment costs, potential compensation fees to another club, and the wages of a new coaching team, the overall expense could rise dramatically.
Dr Wilson believes the £50 million figure is realistic when comparing it to the costs involved in replacing Ten Hag with Amorim. While Amorim’s salary was lower than that of many Premier League managers, largely due to the initial expense of releasing him from Sporting, the cumulative impact of repeated managerial changes is becoming increasingly damaging.
This level of spending is particularly concerning at a time when Manchester United are reportedly making redundancies and tightening budgets in other areas of the club. Once again, a change on the touchline threatens to derail long term planning, both on the pitch and financially.
