Shock return on the cards! Mohamed Salah could leave Liverpool to rejoin former club

Mohamed Salah could be on the move once again as tensions rise at Liverpool, and Roma are quietly dreaming of a sensational reunion with the Egyptian superstar. While financial barriers make any deal extremely difficult, the mere possibility has sparked major intrigue ahead of the January transfer window.

Roma are reportedly monitoring Mohamed Salah’s situation closely as uncertainty continues to surround the Egyptian star’s future at Liverpool. While a return to the Stadio Olimpico remains a long shot, growing tension at Anfield has opened the door, at least in theory, to one of the most sensational moves in recent Serie A history.

According to Italian outlet La Repubblica, relations between Salah and Liverpool have deteriorated in recent weeks despite the winger signing a contract extension until 2027 earlier this year. The arrival of head coach Arne Slot has reportedly altered Salah’s role within the squad, with several high-profile omissions and public comments adding strain to an already fragile relationship.

Sources in Italy suggest Liverpool would be open to discussing an extraordinary loan move during the January transfer window if the situation worsens. However, financial reality remains the biggest obstacle. Salah earns an estimated €24 million gross per season, meaning a six-month loan would still cost Roma close to €12 million, even if the player accepted a reduced salary. For a club operating under strict financial controls, such an investment would be extremely difficult to justify.

As a result, Roma view Salah as a dream scenario rather than an active negotiation. While new head coach Gian Piero Gasperini is keen to strengthen his attacking options, the club’s directors are prioritising more realistic targets who can immediately improve the squad without jeopardising long-term stability.

One of the leading alternatives is Giacomo Raspadori. Talks involving Atlético Madrid are reportedly at an advanced stage, with the Spanish club seeking a deal worth around €20 million. The proposed structure includes a loan with an obligation to buy, triggered by Roma qualifying for the Champions League. Sporting director Frederic Massara is hopeful the deal can be completed quickly, potentially making Raspadori available for Roma’s upcoming trip to Bergamo.

Joshua Zirkzee is another forward being considered, although his situation is more complex. Manchester United are not expected to approve a move before mid-January, forcing Roma to remain patient if they decide to pursue the Dutch striker.

For now, Roma continue to balance ambition with pragmatism. The idea of reuniting with Salah captures the imagination of fans, but the club’s transfer strategy remains grounded in financial realism. Whether the Egyptian star’s Liverpool future truly reaches breaking point remains to be seen, but his name alone has reignited excitement around Roma’s January plans.
