Spanish outlet Fichajes claims Real Madrid have received an offer worth around £9 million for Mendy, whose future at the Bernabeu remains uncertain. While the fee would not fully recoup Madrid’s original investment, it would significantly ease their wage bill, with the Frenchman reportedly earning close to £220,000 per week and still having 18 months left on his contract.
At 30, Mendy brings pedigree few players in Sunderland’s squad can match. A 10-cap France international, he has won multiple domestic titles and the Champions League during his time in Madrid. However, injuries have severely limited his involvement over the past year, with just a handful of appearances across all competitions and only brief cameos in La Liga.
Despite those concerns, Sunderland believe the risk is calculated. The club have already enjoyed success by blending youth with experienced professionals this season. Granit Xhaka and Reinildo have both played pivotal roles, offering leadership, composure and tactical intelligence in key moments. Mendy would fit that same profile, providing defensive stability and elite-level know-how.
From Real Madrid’s perspective, the emergence of Álvaro Carreras as first-choice left-back has reduced Mendy’s importance in the squad. While his quality is not in doubt when fit, recurring physical issues have cast a shadow over his long-term role in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans.
For Regis Le Bris, securing a player of Mendy’s calibre would be a statement of intent. It would signal Sunderland’s transition from survival-focused newcomers to a club actively shaping a sustainable Premier League future.
