Surprise deal brewing? Chelsea weigh late loan move for former Aston Villa star
Chelsea are exploring a surprise option in the final stages of the January transfer window as Douglas Luiz emerges as a potential short-term solution for their midfield concerns. The Brazilian international is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest from Juventus, but his spell at the City Ground has not gone as planned. Limited playing time and ongoing fitness issues have prevented Luiz from establishing himself as a regular starter, prompting discussions over a possible early termination of his loan deal.
Luiz joined Juventus from Aston Villa for over £42 million 18 months ago, yet failed to cement a consistent role in Serie A. With appearances hard to come by in Italy, the midfielder opted for a Premier League return last summer in search of regular football. However, that objective has not been realised, with just five league starts so far this season.
Forest’s managerial change earlier in the campaign further complicated matters, as Luiz has struggled to fit into Sean Dyche’s preferred system. A previous hamstring injury also disrupted his rhythm, leaving his future uncertain as the season reaches a critical phase.
Chelsea are closely monitoring the situation and believe Luiz’s experience could add depth and balance to their midfield. While Liam Rosenior already has several options at his disposal, injuries have significantly limited his choices. Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo have both endured frustrating spells on the sidelines, forcing Chelsea to carefully manage workloads across competitions.
Luiz’s familiarity with the Premier League is viewed as a major advantage, particularly in a squad that has been prone to inconsistency in central areas. His ability to operate as a holding midfielder or in a more advanced role adds further appeal as Chelsea assess short-term reinforcements.
Competition for his signature could still emerge. Aston Villa are understood to be considering a reunion with their former player following the season-ending knee injury suffered by Boubacar Kamara. That setback has left Unai Emery’s side light in midfield, potentially bringing them into the race.
Beyond midfield, Chelsea are also evaluating defensive options before the window closes. Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet remains high on their shortlist, with personal terms reportedly agreed, although a transfer fee has yet to be settled. Marcos Senesi is another name linked, but Bournemouth are reluctant to sell midway through the season.
With Chelsea having picked up momentum under Rosenior, the club is keen to reinforce intelligently rather than overhaul the squad. A loan move for Douglas Luiz could offer a low-risk solution as Chelsea look to maintain stability and push for a strong second half of the campaign.
