Ter Stegen gives green light to Girona loan as Barcelona talks reach crucial stage
Marc-Andre ter Stegen has moved a step closer to a temporary exit from Barcelona after agreeing in principle to join Girona on loan, with both clubs now locked in talks to finalise the financial terms before the winter transfer window closes.
The German goalkeeper’s stance is clear. He wants to play. With the 2026 World Cup firmly on the horizon, ter Stegen believes regular minutes are essential if he is to remain a serious option for Germany at international level. Sitting on the bench at Barcelona for the remainder of the season is not a scenario he is prepared to accept.
Girona have emerged as his preferred destination. The project appeals to him, the sporting environment offers immediate opportunities, and the prospect of being a guaranteed starter makes the move a logical one. However, despite his openness to leaving, ter Stegen has drawn firm boundaries. He will not force his way out of Barcelona, nor will he accept a salary reduction to ease negotiations.
That position has complicated discussions. Barcelona are willing to sanction a loan but are pushing for Girona to cover between 20 and 25 percent of the goalkeeper’s wages. At present, that demand remains beyond Girona’s reach, even after recent adjustments to their wage structure following outgoing transfers.
From a footballing perspective, the situation at Barcelona leaves little room for ambiguity. Under Hansi Flick, the pecking order has been firmly established. Joan García has become the undisputed first choice across La Liga, the Champions League and the Supercopa, with his status reinforced during the club’s recent campaign in Saudi Arabia. Ter Stegen, once the undisputed number one, has been pushed to the margins.
Staying at Camp Nou would likely limit him to sporadic appearances in domestic cup competitions, and even those minutes are far from guaranteed given competition from Wojciech Szczesny. For a goalkeeper of his stature and ambition, such a role is increasingly difficult to justify.
The negotiations have unfolded alongside concerns over ter Stegen’s physical condition. The goalkeeper briefly returned to Barcelona after experiencing discomfort in his right knee, which has undergone multiple surgeries in the past. Medical examinations ruled out any serious injury, allowing him to rejoin the squad shortly after. Club officials later confirmed the issue was precautionary rather than alarming.
Publicly, all parties have remained cautious. Ter Stegen has avoided discussing his future, while Girona coach Míchel has refused to comment on players not currently under his control. According to reports, Girona are the only club to have formally approached Barcelona, underlining the seriousness of their interest.
If an agreement is reached, the loan could prove beneficial across the board. Girona would secure an elite-level goalkeeper for the second half of the season, Barcelona would ease squad congestion without severing ties, and ter Stegen would regain the competitive rhythm he believes is vital for the next chapter of his career.
