Top 5 best Romanian football players of all time: No doubt Gheorghe Hagi takes the No.1 spot
Romania was one of just four European nations to compete at the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930, underlining its long-standing football tradition. Over the years, the national team has qualified for seven World Cup tournaments, with its most memorable period coming in the 1990s.
During that decade, Romania enjoyed a sustained run of success on the international stage, largely inspired by Gheorghe Hagi. In Euro 2000, they consistently progressed through strong groups featuring sides such as Germany, Portugal and England, before eventually being eliminated by eventual runners-up Italy.
In this article, Nowgoalmobi.net presents the top 5 best Romanian football players of all time, highlighting the standout figures the country has produced.
Top 5 best Romanian football players of all time
5. Gheorghe Popescu
Renowned for his intelligence and ability to read the game, Gheorghe Popescu operated primarily as a defender, although he was equally comfortable in central defence or as a defensive midfielder.
Over the course of his career, he represented a number of clubs, most notably FC Barcelona, where he was entrusted with the captaincy. At international level, Popescu earned 115 caps for Romania, featuring in three World Cups in 1990, 1994 and 1998, as well as two European Championships in 1996 and 2000.
His consistency was reflected in individual recognition, as he remained in the top four of the Romanian Footballer of the Year rankings for 13 consecutive years between 1989 and 2001, winning the award on six occasions. In total, he made nearly 500 league appearances and scored 64 goals, underlining his influence at both ends of the pitch.
4. Adrian Mutu
At his peak in Italy, Adrian Mutu earned the nickname “Il Fenomeno”, a reflection of his natural talent and attacking flair. Comfortable across the front line, he could operate as a striker, second forward, winger or attacking midfielder, combining goalscoring instinct with creative ability.
Across his club career, Mutu scored 160 goals in 437 appearances, featuring for sides such as Dinamo București, Inter Milan, Parma, Chelsea, Juventus and Fiorentina. On the international stage, he remains Romania’s joint all-time top scorer with 35 goals in 77 caps, sharing the record with Gheorghe Hagi.
Individually, he was named Romanian Footballer of the Year on four occasions and also received the Guerin d’Oro in 2007, awarded to Serie A’s best player. However, his career was also marked by controversy. A failed drug test for cocaine during his time at Chelsea led to a seven-month ban and a prolonged legal dispute over compensation. Later, in 2010, he received a further suspension after testing positive for sibutramine while at Fiorentina.
3. Ilie Balaci
Widely regarded as one of Romania’s finest, and by many the most naturally gifted, Ilie Balaci built a career that is often defined as much by its brilliance as by its cruel interruption.
Balaci emerged early, making his top-flight debut at just 16 and earning his first international cap against France a year later. Between 1974 and 1986, he went on to collect 65 caps and score eight goals for the national team.
At club level, he became the driving force behind the famed “Craiova Maxima” side, helping Universitatea Craiova become the first Romanian team to reach a European semi-final. He spent the majority of his career there, making 285 appearances and scoring 76 goals, while winning three league titles and four Romanian Cups. His influence was further recognised with back-to-back Romanian Footballer of the Year awards in 1981 and 1982, at a time of strong domestic competition.
However, his peak was cut short in February 1984 after a serious knee injury sustained in a match against FC Baia Mare. The incident effectively ended his career at the highest level, leaving a lasting sense of what might have been.
2. Nicolae Dobrin
While Gheorghe Hagi built his legacy on achievements and Gheorghe Popescu on consistency, Nicolae Dobrin was widely regarded as the game’s purest talent.
He spent the vast majority of his career with FC Argeș Pitești, establishing himself as both a club legend and one of the finest players in Romanian league history. Despite limited support around him, Dobrin led Argeș to two league titles, underlining his influence on the side.
His ability did not go unnoticed abroad, with Real Madrid showing long-term interest, although a move never materialised due to restrictions in Romania at the time. Internationally, he was part of the squad for the 1970 World Cup but did not feature. Nevertheless, his domestic impact was clear, as he was named Romanian Footballer of the Year three times, in 1966, 1967 and 1971.
1. Gheorghe Hagi
There is little debate over the top spot, which firmly belongs to Gheorghe Hagi. Widely known as the “Maradona of the Carpathians”, he remains the most iconic figure in Romanian football history.
Hagi enjoyed a distinguished club career, scoring 237 goals in 516 appearances, while also representing both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona in Spain. His influence was equally evident at international level, having made his debut for Romania in August 1983 at just 18, before going on to earn 124 caps and score 35 goals.
Individually, he was recognised as Romanian Footballer of the Year a record seven times and received six Ballon d’Or nominations. His standing in the global game was further underlined in 1999, when he was ranked 25th in World Soccer Magazine’s list of the greatest players of the 20th century.
